DIY Anniversary Pillow

I recently saw an Anniversary Pillow on Pinterest. It was made out of burlap and had a date painted on it. I really wanted to replicate it but decided to use dropcloth instead of burlap. Don't get me wrong, I love burlap, but dropcloth is much softer and I wanted the pillow for our bed.

This is my final outcome...

And this is how I made it...

Supplies Needed:
- Drop Cloth
- Freezer Paper
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brush
- Sewing Machine

First, I cut 2 rectangles out of the dropcloth for my pillow...roughly 12 inches by 32 inches.

Next, I used my Silhouette to cut stencils out of freezer paper (you can also do this by hand, I have done so here )...

Then I ironed on my freezer paper onto one side of the pillow...you do this with the shiny side down...so that the iron is touching the side that feels like paper.

Once I finished ironing, the freezer paper makes a tight seal to the dropcloth so that I can easily paint the numbers onto the fabric.

Then I started painting the numbers with black acrylic paint.

After the paint dried, I peeled off all of the freezer paper. This is the ideal time to touch up any rough edges.

Once my touch ups were completely dry, I put the right sides of my pillow sides together and sewed 3 of the edges together and parts of the final edge. I left a slot open for stuffing. I then flipped the pillow right side out and got ready to stuff...

Once I finished stuffing, I pinned the slot closed so that I could hand stitch it closed.

Once the pillow was sewed up, I hot glued 3 dropcloth rosettes onto the corner of the pillow.

I am so excited to put this on our bed! I am in the process of starting our master bedroom makeover. This will definitely be the perfect centerpiece to our new bedspread!

  1. Love the anniversary pillow! What a terrific idea. I like how the pillow is a neutral color so that if you change out your bedding, it will still match!

  3. Katie-

I LOVE your pillow! And I LOVE the idea of using drop cloth instead of burlap...still really rustic looking, but yeah...even my son complains about the burlap!
